Three Years

There is something about expat life

that hardens a person.

No longer cushioned by the comfort of

family and longtime friends,

you have to endure the prickly company

of people you have nothing in common with.

So much time spent with people you do not love

so much distance between you and the ones you love most

proves a tough trial for the soft heart.

So you adapt

you lower your guard and your standards

and you learn to live in a moderate

yet tolerable state

of loneliness.
